Electrical Conductivity

An electric charge may develop in a bearing within a split second leading to discharge via the bearing balls and raceways. This phenomenon can result in serious bearing damage. Equipment transporting plastic foil or paper are particularly at risk due to the potential for static electrical build up and discharge. Electric motor bearings and generators (wind power stations...) may also suffer similar electrical discharge damage failures.
Electrical current passage through the bearing may result in elec- trical arcing damage to balls and raceways which can appear as craters or grooves, often with a “bar-code” like symmetry. Craters may be formed due to localised melting of the surfaces of the bearing raceways and balls. Fragments of molten metal may well be removed and re-deposited in other areas of the raceways where they are rolled over into the raceway substrate. Tell-tale electrical erosion grooves are formed as a result of the simultaneous stressing of the rolling elements and raceways in the load area where the current flow is most apparent. It is normal to have to replace a damaged bearing once electrical erosion damage has taken place, no form of repair is possible.
In an attempt to prevent electrical erosion damage the operator or equipment designer can either change machinery construction elements or select and use an electrically conductive lubricant, particularly when only low voltage currents occur. Such lubricants are able to conduct the electrical current through the bearing so that point-to-point flashovers are eradicated. It should be noted that specially developed electrically conduc- tive greases have a very low electrical resistance in the region 105 ohms ∙ cm.
Features, Application
Electroconductive rolling bearing grease
Kluberlectric BE 44-152 is a fully synthetic lubricating grease based on a synthetic hydrocarbon oil, lithium soap and dark solid lubricants. Due to its special composition, static electricity in rolling bearings is conducted through the grease, thus preventing local voltage discharge, which would severely damage the bearing raceways and rolling elements.
Special grease for the lubrication of electrical switches, contacts and sensors
Kluberlectric KR 44-102 is a special grease for the lubrication of electrical switches, contacts and sensors. It consists of a synthetic hydrocarbon oil and lithium soap incorporating a UV indicator for quality inspection. A special additive combination makes Kluberlectric KR 44-102 particularly suitable for the lubrication of electrical contacts.
Electroconductive low-noise rolling bearing grease for long-term lubrication
Kluberlectric BQ 72-72 was developed as an electroconductive rolling bearing grease with added excellent low-noise characteristics. Due to the use of selected additives based on ionic liquids, the lubricant's electroconductivity was increased, attaining resistance characteristics resembling those of semiconductors.
Paste for easy assembly of plastic and elastomer components in the electrical industry
Kluberlectric R 64-401 is a fully synthetic assembly paste based on synthetic hydrocarbons and silicate.
Kluberlectric R 64-401 reduces the force needed to assemble silicone-based elastomers in electrical components and devices without affecting the insulating effect of plastic and elastomer materials.
High-temperature long-term greases
BARRIERTA is Europe's oldest high-quality brand of high-temperature lubricants based on PFPE. Today the name of BARRIERTA is widely regarded as synonymous with long-term stability and thermal resistance.
We are committed to live up to this good reputation. BARRIERTA L55 series products are made from clearly specified raw materials and the production and quality of the end product is closely monitored.
Synthetic rolling and plain bearing greases
ISOFLEX TOPAS NB 52, NB 152 are rolling and plain bearing greases based on a synthetic hydrocarbon oil and a barium complex soap. The special barium-soap thickener used in the greases offers good load-carrying capacity as well as resistance to water and ambient media unlike other soap-based thickeners. Both products show good protection against corrosion as well as oxidation and ageing stability. The Kluber barium complex soap is ELINCS-registered and approved by GASG (Global Automotive Stakeholders Group).
